We are seeking a detail-oriented and knowledgeable Senior Payroll Tax Accountant to support and ensure accurate payroll tax compliance for our client in Burbank, CA. This position plays a critical role in managing payroll tax operations, including the preparation and reconciliation of payroll tax filings, maintaining compliance with evolving tax regulations, and coordinating with third-party tax service providers.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the end-to-end process for payroll tax reporting and remittances at the federal, state/provincial, and local levels in the U.S. and Canada.

  • Interpret and apply current tax laws and changes in legislation to maintain compliance across multiple jurisdictions.

  • Complete periodic tax filings and reconciliations, including U.S. Forms 941 and W-3, and Canadian T-4s.

  • Process tax payments and filings not handled by third-party providers.

  • Administer and update tax rates and codes in payroll and third-party systems.

  • Track and manage workers’ compensation rates and filings across Canadian provinces.

  • Perform regular audits of payroll tax configurations, focusing on accurate state/province assignments for employees with differing work locations.

  • Proactively identify and address tax discrepancies or system issues.

  • Respond to government agency notices and collaborate with relevant departments for resolution.

  • Maintain up-to-date credentials and access for tax agency portals at all applicable levels.

  • Review payroll data and make necessary adjustments to taxable wages and deductions.

  • Escalate unresolved payroll tax concerns to management in a timely manner.

  • Generate and distribute payroll-related reports on a scheduled and ad-hoc basis.

  • Liaise with external tax partners to ensure timely and accurate payroll tax submissions.

  • Act as a subject matter expert and provide support for employee payroll tax inquiries.

  • Support special projects and cross-functional initiatives within the Payroll and Finance teams.


Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience with high-volume payroll operations.

  • Strong familiarity with payroll systems (Workday experience is preferred).

  • Solid understanding of payroll taxes, wage laws, garnishments, deductions, and exemptions.

  • Proven experience with payroll tax reconciliation (e.g., 941s, W-3s).

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (e.g., pivot tables, data filtering, and formulas).

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Capability to develop and interpret custom reports in HR/payroll systems.

  • Payroll certification (FPC or CPP) is a plus.



Pay Details: $40.00 to $44.00 per hour
