Summary: Under the direction of the Engineering Supervisor, the Electrical Design Engineer is responsible for working closely with highly skilled mechanical, electrical, and project management professionals to design electrical systems. The role involves ensuring engineering department methods and practices are up to date, including training, knowledge sharing, technical guidance, and checking the work of other department members. A key role will be to understand and adapt global group company technologies for application in North American customer sites while ensuring adherence to relevant North American standards and accepted industry practices. Additionally, this position is responsible for the ongoing implementation of improved quality and reliability of systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop and prepare electrical designs and drawings from preliminary concepts, sketches, engineering calculations, specification sheets, and other data while conforming to sound engineering practices.
Create and maintain electrical schematics and other support drawings using EPLAN and AutoCAD electrical software during and after the build cycle.
Ensure equipment design integrity meets all aspects of functional design requirements, including rate capacity, strength, reliability, and service life expectations.
Apply expert knowledge of relevant North American codes, standards, and practices to assess designs and provide technical recommendations and guidance to stakeholders.
Integrate concepts that contribute to the safety of the equipment and its design.
Create and maintain safety validation documentation, including SISTEMA files.
Ensure system performance reliability, conformance to customer specifications, and quality standards.
Develop engineering department technical guidelines, documentation, and standards.
Create estimates for projects that detail material costs and design hours.
Maintain device and system engineering drawing packages and other support documentation.
Maintain budget and schedule commitments during the design cycle.
Research and justify product choices for electrical components and submit purchase orders.
Attend project kick-off meetings to gain knowledge on project specifications, expectations, and timelines.
Schedule, chair, and create minutes for design reviews as required throughout the design cycle.
Attend project update meetings to review and ensure projects are on budget and on schedule.
Participate in “postmortem” meetings to discuss project successes and opportunities for improvement.
Assist in identifying and addressing electrical issues arising on the shop floor and/or at the customer site.
Assist the Engineering Supervisor in the implementation and maintenance of established goals for quality and reliability of systems.
Respond to inquiries, questions, and concerns from individual employees, departments, and customers.
Develop design-related documentation, including operating, setup, repair, and maintenance manuals and procedures.
Ensure all departmental procedures, health and safety policies, and responsibilities under the OHSA are followed during all work activities.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum ten (10) years’ experience as an Electrical Engineer in an industrial/engineering/automation environment.
Experience with EPLAN and AutoCAD Electrical required.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
Ability to convert and perform engineering calculations in all units of measure.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Strong ability to develop electrical designs of complex automated systems from basic concepts.
Knowledge of electrical systems including 400/480VAC 3-phase, controls, I/O systems, servo control, safety circuits, and pneumatics.
Familiarity with modular cabling technologies, cable tray systems, and electrical installations.
Electrical wiring experience and familiarity with mechanical systems is considered an asset.
Expertise in safety system design with experience in assessing safety circuits.
Knowledge of basic robotic operations, including mechanical, electrical, and software interfacing.
Understanding of, and experience with, conveying and material handling equipment.
Ability to collaborate with 3rd party vendors to integrate purchased equipment modules into a unified material handling/transportation system.
High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-function team.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and other common software packages.
Ability to learn and use other software packages, such as ERP software.
Travel: Up to 20% travel. A valid driver’s license and good driving record are required. Must have or be eligible to obtain a passport for international travel.
