Senior Embedded Software Engineer

Location: Irvine, CA
Schedule: Hybrid (4 days onsite; Friday WFH)
Employment Type: Full Time, Permanent

About the Opportunity

A rapidly growing technology organization in Irvine is seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to join a highly collaborative engineering team. This role offers the chance to build core embedded systems used in real world environments across major retail locations. The team is energized under new leadership and is investing heavily in modernizing platforms, enhancing device intelligence, and improving reliability across connected products.

If you enjoy owning embedded development end to end, working with Linux based systems, and contributing at a senior autonomous level, this role provides both challenge and visibility.


What You Will Do

  • Develop and maintain firmware across embedded Linux platforms, including kernel, u boot, and device drivers

  • Build firmware applications for smart retail and edge computing devices, optimizing for performance, power consumption, and reliability

  • Create tools for diagnostics, testing, data collection, and performance validation

  • Investigate issues, perform root cause analysis, and deliver well documented fixes

  • Participate in architecture, design, and code reviews

  • Approve and collaborate on validation methods with SQA

  • Support integration across gateways, cameras, wireless systems, BLE devices, and cloud connected services

  • Contribute to long term embedded platform modernization, including Linux optimizations, secure boot, telemetry, and diagnostics

  • Implement firmware supporting BLE, Wi Fi, RF, and IoT protocols such as MQTT, WebSockets, and REST

  • Work closely with cross functional teams including software, hardware, data, and ML engineers


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field

  • 7 to 10 plus years of embedded software development

  • Strong proficiency in C, C plus plus, Python

  • Deep experience with embedded Linux (kernel, drivers, build systems, u boot)

  • Familiarity with Yocto or similar build environments

  • Experience with wireless systems: BLE, Wi Fi, RF

  • Strong debugging and test automation skills (oscilloscope, logic analyzer, GDB, JTAG, etc.)

  • Ability to design for low power, memory constrained systems

  • Strong analytical and problem solving ability

  • Must be a US Citizen or Green Card holder


Highly Preferred

  • Experience with edge gateways (Intel or ARM SBCs)

  • Experience with Docker, containers, or Kubernetes on embedded systems

  • Knowledge of IoT architectures and cloud integrations (Azure, GCP equivalents)

  • Exposure to sensor fusion, computer vision, or edge ML pipelines

  • Background in retail, industrial IoT, or safety critical embedded systems


Compensation and Benefits

  • Senior level competitive base salary (market aligned)

  • 5 percent annual incentive bonus

  • Medical, dental, PTO, and standard benefits package



Pay Details: $150,000.00 to $190,000.00 per year
